I’ve struggled with self-control my whole life! And whenever I try to rely on my strength and willpower, my efforts fall decidedly short of the mark. However, I’ve discovered why Paul teaches that self-control is a fruit of the Holy Spirit.
The more I depend on God and look to him as my source of strength and restraint, the more self-control I am able to exhibit. It comes from him, not me.
Since September is a “fresh start” time for many of us with the start of the new school year, it’s a good time to assess how our lives are going, where we need to make some changes, and what we need to celebrate. No matter what goals you set for yourself or what struggles you face, the issue of self-control is likely to play a large part in achieving your objectives and overcoming your trials.
So today, I’ve made you a little gift of five bookmarks with some Scriptures that have helped me cultivate a bigger harvest of the fruit of self-control. Click here to get your bookmark set now!
Five Scriptures Related to Self-Control
The following passages have helped me lean in to God’s instructions with regard to the importance and source of self-control. It is the Holy Spirit within me who provides the power but I must make every effort to submit to and tap into his power.
This isn’t about being legalistic with myself (or others). It is about drawing closer to God and letting him help me. It is about making sure Jesus is my Lord above all things and not allowing anything else to have my focus more than him.
My battle with my weight is the most visible area in which the fruit is evident. When I focus on diet, exercise, and trying to lose weight, I have meager success, if any at all. When I put my focus on God and his Word, I find reserves of self-control that just amaze me.
After experiencing God’s help with overcoming my fears related to heights and falling earlier this summer, I tapped into that same power and got back in the ring with my diet. Twenty pounds have dropped away and it is all fruit of the Holy Spirit’s power at work. I see the direct connection between the results on the scale and my submitting to him and staying connected with him in prayer and study of the Word.
Regardless your battlefield or goals, I’m guessing you will benefit from a larger harvest of this particular fruit of the Spirit.
Here are a few Scripture verses I have found helpful:

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.”
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.”
Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.”
‘All things are lawful for me’ but not all things are beneficial. ‘All things are lawful for me’ but I will not be dominated by anything.”
